The images are artificially generated by a “generative adversarial neural network.” Actually two computer programs — one generates new, synthetic images out of random noise, and ‘learns’ to ‘fool’ the other program that is designed to classify images as being ‘real’ vs. ‘fake.’ The results are amazing.
