For those who may wish to know “what is surrealism?”

“Dictionary: Surrealism, n. Pure psychic automatism, by which one proposes to express, either verbally, in writing, or by any other manner, the real functioning of thought. Dictation of thought in the absence of all control exercised by reason, outside of all aesthetic and moral preoccupation.”

At that time, Breton doubted that visual arts could embody surrealism in its true form, as aesthetic concerns necessarily come into play. However surrealism has inspired and continues to inspire many artists — from Dali, Yves Tanguy, Max Ernst, to Arshile Gorky, William Baziotes, Joan Miro, Dorothea Tanning, to the “New York School” abstract expressionists…
