painting

Oil and color pencil on canvas, 6″x 12″, 2016

My paintings are a kind of visual music, each an improvisation. As an initial idea, theme, or motif is set down, the basic wholeness of the blank canvas — like silence in music — is broken.  As I work, relationships emerge, possibilities which may seem potentially endless. The shape of the work gradually tells me what it wants to be, as if pursuing its own telos, the muse seemingly driving the process with I just serving to be her or its vehicle. The plethora of visual ideas is gradually winnowed down to a singular image or vision.

Art for me is exploration, process, and discovery of things which I still do not know.
